Fairport Containers hooked on benefits of first DAF15 July 2019

Fairport Containers, part of the Fairport Engineering Group, has taken delivery of its first DAF vehicle, an XF 450 FAR drawbar, to use on skip refurbishment operations from a new site in Bridgewater.

The 26-tonne gvw, tag-axle, 6x2 rigid is plated for 44 tonnes gcw and bodied for hookloader operations.

After talking to local dealer Lancashire DAF, the Adlington-based operator asked for a formal quotation.

“That came in at a very competitive level, so with a three-year R&M package included and a DAF dealer close by the Bridgewater plant where we planned to station the truck, we decided to go for the XF,” says Lee Cunliffe, Fairport’s fleet engineer.

“It was a big decision to move from our well-established marque, but we have no complaints so far,” he says, adding that the driver is “loving it” and initial signs are that fuel performance is good.

The Adlington, Chorley site is the operator’s HQ, where it has its own workshops to maintain the 45-strong fleet. As the new XF will be based in Bridgewater, Wessex DAF will handle routine work, says Cunliffe, “but I definitely want to see it in here at least once a year. That way we can inspect and assess it against general fleet condition, as well as handle its MOT.”
