FE diesel-electric hybrid targets set out by Volvo 06 October 2011

Volvo Trucks says it will deliver a total of 100 FE diesel-electric hybrid trucks to 13 European countries by 2013 – and the first has already gone to Spar Austria.

"I think it's sensational that the fully-hybrid truck does not need to be charged at the mains, but that the battery recharges itself through the vehicle's own braking force," says Spar Austria CEO Dr Gerhard Drexel.

"That's why the truck will mainly be used on the streets of Vienna, where constant starting and stopping is unavoidable," he adds.

The hybrid reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20%. Depending on usage, it can travel shorter distances silently and with zero emissions at speeds of up to 50km/h on its electric motor alone.
