First DAF trucks for Irn-Bru maker AG Barr14 June 2018

Irn-Bru maker AG Barr has taken delivery of 16 DAF New LF curtainsiders – the first DAF trucks in the Scottish soft drinks maker’s 100-strong fleet.

Supplied by dealer F&G Commercials, the operator’s additions are all New LF 230 FA 18-tonners, with curtainsider bodies by Bevan.

DAF was chosen, according to AG Barr, for its ‘no fuss’ approach to dealing with a list of requirements.

Steve Bird, transport services supervisor, explains: “I had the task of speccing the new trucks and produced what in my mind was the full ideal spec, which I gave to DAF. They seemed to relish the challenges and came back quickly with everything we wanted, at a competitive price.”

His criteria included excellent direct vision, lowest possible loading height, and automated gearboxes with functions such as hill start, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, advanced emergency braking and more.

AG Barr sought feedback from several of its drivers before reaching a decision.

Fuel efficiency also played a key part, as Bird says: “We know from reports that all DAF trucks set high standards for fuel economy and the ‘New’ models are all expected to improve on even those, so we immediately reduce emissions and demands on fossil fuel resources.

“We have also specified an engine-idle shutdown system. Engine idling is a major contributor to any operator’s costs and there’s a big environmental price that goes with it,” he adds.

The vehicles are supplied with a three-year R&M package.
