First Solomon bodied Scania Slipstream 26-tonner for Langdons 04 June 2013

New to Langdons is a Nagel Group liveried 26-tonne Scania-chassised slipstream, as the cold and frozen haulage and distribution specialist looks to trial new cost-reducing ideas and bodies from over the next few years.

With 72 new arrivals already this year, the firm has seen additions from Gray & Adams and Lawrence David, as well as Renault, Scania and DAF, ordered to augment Langdons growing urban fleet.

"The slipstream is part of a seven-vehicle order from Solomons we decided to trial after seeing a similar vehicle built for Tesco," says Langdons engineering manager Tyrone Lanaway.

"It is on one of 12 Scania 26-tonners purchased this year, with a 16-pallet, 9m body, vortex generator and raduis body cappings – all of which are standard across the fleet now – on a 5.7m wheelbase, with a 9-tonne front axle," he continues.

"This year, that's on air suspension so that we can report back to the driver, via the Scania display, and office, if an axle goes over weight."

Emails, he says, are sent to the traffic office as soon as an axle is over the threshold, thanks to Seven Telematics.

Langdons went for the 9-litre 280bhp Euro 5 EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engine mated to Scania's Opticruise 2 pedal automatic, which is also now standard across its fleet.

The Solomon/Scania Slipstream has been fitted with a dual-temperature, Thermo King T1000 S Spectrum S3 S3 fridge unit and Anteo level ride slide tail lift.

The new Scania 26-tonner will be used across the Chillnet fleet, carrying out door-to-door deliveries from one of Langdons' nine depots across the UK.

Lanaway says that 13 more urban trailers have been ordered for the Chillnet fleet, split between Gray & Adams, Lawrence David and Solomon.

Changes to the last urban trailers included deletion of the rear-steer in favour of a tandem super single set up.

"This is to change from column tail lifts to the Anteo level ride sliding tail lift to fit behind the axles, this year supplied by Daimler Chrysler," he says, adding that all the trailers are 11m, 20-pallet bodies with Thermo King SLX S2 S2 dual-temperature fridges.

Meanwhile, 66 tractor units are being supplied by DAF, Renault and Scania, with a mix of CFs, Highlines, Premiums and G cabs. Also, 23 trailers – a mix from Montracon and Gray & Adams, all with the vortex generators and radius cappings, have been ordered – all again with Thermo King SLX Spectrum 50 S3 S3 dual temp fridges.
