The voluntary scheme, operated by TRL, encourages commercial fleet operators to boost their environmental credentials by running vehicles more efficiently (see also ‘Heroes of Zero’ feature in Transport Engineer, April 2019 – click the link below).
As well as Newport City Council’s transport unit, other operators in the area have signed up to ECO Stars, including Newport Norse, Wastesavers, Owens Group, Amberon Traffic Management and Jumbo Cruiser.
Councillor Ray Truman hosted a launch event at the civic centre in Newport to recognise the efforts of those who have joined the scheme and to promote the scheme to other local operators.
He said: “We are delighted to be bringing the ECO Stars scheme to Newport and will be spreading the word about the benefits of fleet operators signing up to get help and advice on how to operate more efficiently, reduce fuel consumptions and, as a result, reduce costs.
“This will help the council’s drive towards a cleaner, greener Newport.”
