Fleets make smart use of mobile devices, says Chevin11 February 2015

Fleet operators are increasingly using mobile devices to gain more benefit from their fleet management systems, according to Chevin Fleet Solutions.

Some, for example, are using smartphones and tablets to help manage compliance, fulfil legal obligations and monitor maintenance needs, says the firm.

"Especially among commercial vehicles fleets, we are seeing smartphones being used for a range of tasks – for example to enable the carrying out of basic daily maintenance checks that are part of O licence requirements," states Chevin's David Gladding.

"We are working with an 800-vehicle fleet where this fundamental job generated a paper check for each van every day, but a mobile device means that the whole process can become easily automated."

As awareness spreads, this type of gain for fleet management systems is boosting system sales, according to Gladding. He also says mobile devices are being used for proactive maintenance inspections, with drivers more likely to report issues before they result in vehicle downtime.

Chevin launched FleetWave Mobile last year and, says Gladding, "it is exceptionally versatile and, every week, we seem to come across new uses that will deliver real and measurable benefits to fleets".

A key feature of FleetWave Mobile is that it can be used offline and data uploaded when a connection becomes available, meaning the device can still be used even without a mobile signal.
