Flogas lit up by safety and fuel efficiency of Actros 26 June 2018

LPG supplier Flogas has taken delivery of nine Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks, its first new Mercedes trucks for 15 years, after a fuel trial revealed the potential for “substantial” cost savings.

The Leicester-based operator was also impressed by the trucks’ safety features and the dealer’s commitment to zero downtime.

Supplied by Mertrux Truck & Van, the Leicester-based operator’s new additions are Actros 2445 models with StreamSpace cabs. They are powered by 444bhp engines paired with PowerShift automated transmissions.

The vehicles are supplied on contract hire through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services and join the operator’s 400-strong mixed fleet.

Smaller, 17.5in wheels on the mid-lift axles save around 300kg compared to the standard version with 22.5in wheels, while also freeing up space on the chassis for discharge equipment. The trucks comply with PetReg standards and pull bulk tank trailers at 44 tonnes gcw.

They are also specified with Mercedes-Benz Safety Packs, which include the Active Brake Assist 4 emergency braking system, with its pedestrian recognition capability, and Proximity Control Assist.

Flogas has been running a pair of four-year-old Actros tractors which it inherited as the result of an acquisition. It also purchased five Fuso Canters – a trio of 3.5-tonners and two 7.5-tonners, one a diesel-electric Eco Hybrid model – from Mertrux late last year, for delivering bottled gas in London.

Fleet manager Stephen Moir says: “I’ve been really impressed by the level of engagement we’ve seen from the Mertrux team... The communication has been superb.

He describes the pedestrian recognition feature as “a truly awesome piece of technology,” and says the fuel efficiency potential was “another big selling point”. He explains: “Our established tractor units typically average between 8.5 and 9.5 mpg, but the trials we’ve undertaken indicate that if used correctly the Mercedes-Benz will return 10.5-11 mpg. An improvement of this magnitude would represent a substantial cost saving for our business.”

Flogas will also use the Fleetboard telematics systems to analyse driver and vehicle performance, targeting training where necessary.
