FP McCann rates first Mercedes-Benz Arocs tippers 15 July 2016

Northern Ireland-based civil engineering contractor FP McCann is reporting exceptional productivity, fuel performance and driver feedback from its first new Mercedes-Benz Arocs.

The Magherafelt-based operator, which runs an 80-strong fleet, says it is also getting first class service from supplying dealer Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI).

FP McCann went for two new 3240K tippers powered by Mercedes 394bhp straight-six engines driving through 12-speed PowerShift 3 AMTs (automated manual transmissions).

Both have been mounted with insulated alloy tipping bodies supplied by McErlean Trailers, of Toomebridge, and Harsh front-end tipping gear.

“The dealer worked very hard to win our business,” says FP McCann regional quarry and transport manager Chris McCloy, adding that the organisation offered the high quality back-up he expects from suppliers.

“I was invited out to Germany when the new model was launched, and jumped at the opportunity to test one off-road,” he explains.

“Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI) later supplied a demonstration unit [which] exercise confirmed that the Arocs is very well designed for off-road work, with excellent ground clearance.”

As for experience to date, McCloy says: “At 19,800kg, the Arocs’ payload is certainly satisfactory, given that Euro 6 inevitably makes chassis heavier.”

And he adds that the vehicles are also achieving “very encouraging” fuel returns, while the warranty cover is “excellent”.

Both of FP McCann’s new Arocs tippers are now transporting surfacing materials from depots at Knockloughrim and Mallusk, for use on road-building projects, including the A31 Magharafelt Bypass and A26 Frosses Road.
