Freightliner in fuel-saving mode with MAN TGX tractors18 August 2014

Freightliner Road Services, part of intermodal operator Freightliner, has taken delivery of 40 MAN TGX tractor units – 39 Euro 5 trucks and one Euro 6.

Supplied on two-year rental through MAN Financial Services, the TGX 24.48 6x2 tractor units are all part of the operator's rolling replacement contract and take MAN's share of its 200-strong, 44-tonne artic fleet to more than 50%.

A focus on drivers – helped by MAN's provision of driving training – and on vehicle wear and tear has, says Freightliner, saved almost £2.4 million over the last five years.

Vehicles are now regularly achieving 10 mpg and, on some operations, 11 mpg, according to Richard Branston, Freightliner's general manager for road operations.

"We're expecting even better long-term gains with the Euro 6 MAN," says Branston, and he adds that the signs are already "encouraging".

"It's very difficult for us to make savings as the average container delivery distance for our trucks is just 56 miles. So, the £2.4 million saving over the last five years demonstrates the massive commitment from our drivers and fully justifies our stringent training programme."

The trucks are serviced by Commercial Motors in Newport.
