Fresh produce distributor goes for growth with Mercedes-Benz21 May 2014

Fresh produce wholesaler and distributor Peter Broughton has doubled its fleet, with a new crop of nine Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Supplied by dealer Euro Commercials (South Wales), the Cardiff-based operator has taken delivery of four 3.5-tonne Sprinter 316 CDIs with refrigerated conversions, two 7.5-tonne Fuso Canter 7C15s, two 15-tonne Atego 1524s and one 26-tonne Axor 2533L truck.

All the vehicles were fitted with insulated curtainside bodies by Transload, of Andover.

Peter Broughton's fleet contains other marques, but the firm has now standardised on Mercedes, citing reliability and quality, as well as whole life running costs as key factors.

"We will be looking to upgrade the remainder of the fleet with more vehicles from Euro Commercials over the next few years," confirms Nicholas Broughton, joint managing director.

"The 26-tonner is our biggest vehicle yet," he adds. "It has a 32 ft body and runs to West Wales each day, returning with fresh produce collected from suppliers.

"The Canter also gives us a market-leading payload of 4.0 tonnes – that's half a tonne more than we'd get on a conventional 7.5-tonner and a crucial advantage in terms of productivity."
