FTA president plans to tackle “unfinished business”15 April 2011

After being confirmed as president of the FTA (Freight Transport Association) for another two years, Stuart Oades has spoken exclusively to Transport Engineer about his hopes for the upcoming term, and what he, and the association hopes to achieve.

"There is a lot of unfinished business here, and a two-year term isn't enough time to really get to understand the organisation and how it all works," explains Oades, who has held the position since 2009.

"We will continue our focus on the environment, and look forward to working with the government to help it understand the challenges that vehicle operators face," states Oades, who points to the latest results of the Low Carbon Reduction Scheme, as just one of the inroads made by the organisation.

FTA's president also stresses the need to work closely with a relatively new government. "When we are getting to know them, continuity is a good thing," says Oades. "Maintaining democracy is important and there needs to be a degree of trust between the two parties in order to work hand-in-hand for the good of the transport industry."

And commenting on FTA's Van Excellence scheme, he adds: "There is a big move in Europe to legislate vans and we believe that voluntary schemes, such as ours, work so much better than a more rigid, detailed legislative system.

"I am looking forward to my next term and to ensuring we continue to develop the organisation to meet our members' needs."
