GB Freight buys first Volvo FH-500 tractor unit25 February 2011

After taking a flexible contract from Thomas Hardie Commercials, GB Freight has added a Volvo FH-500 tractor to its fleet, with a view to buying more.

"I fully intend to keep this truck for two years and then get two more, but with the economy in the state it is, I couldn't safely commit to a conventional two-year contract," comments Peter Rowlands, head of the Cheshire-based haulage company.

Operating from its base near Altrincham, GB Freight now runs three Volvo FH-500 6x2 tractors, all of which move paper reels and corrugated paper for industry suppliers.

Rowlands says he likes the boost in fuel economy. "I'm getting 8.3mpg fully freighted and that's a pretty good figure in this business," he explains. "Anybody can get high returns with a lower gross. I moved a load of toilet rolls to help someone out recently and the FH was giving me over 12mpg."
