German operator taps into solar for refrigerated container transport30 August 2019

German operator B&H Logistik is using a bespoke set-up of Thermo King generator sets and ThermoLite solar panels to increase reliability and efficiency during the transport of refrigerated containers.

The solution was delivered by Thermo King’s German dealer, Transportkuhlung Thermo King, which offered B&H Logistik the Thermo King SGCM300 generator sets (‘gensets’) combined with the solar panels to collect energy and maintain the battery’s charge, even in low light.

“Reliability of the power supply was paramount for us to guarantee continuous cold chain while transporting our customers’ containers on the road,” says Boris Hirschhausen, managing director at B&H Logistik.

“In the past, we had issues with discharged batteries on the gensets that weren’t used every day. This required additional maintenance along with costly and timely visits to the workshop to recharge the battery. With the solar panels installed, this problem is solved.”

The ThermoLite panels were designed to work with refrigeration units, but the dealer decided to install them on the trailer’s chassis to connect with the genset battery.

“Many emergency breakdowns result from discharged batteries when the gensets are not used every day. With ThermoLite solar panels we eliminated that risk and the customer can save both money and time carrying out transport operations instead of spending time in the workshop,” says Marcus Kallmünzer, branch manager at Transportkühlung Thermo King.

Thermo King gensets can be used as mobile power management solutions beyond marine or transport refrigeration applications, and serve as reliable main or supplementary power source.
