Grundy and Co Excavations goes for Volvo FM 8x4 tippers 30 June 2010

Widnes-based, Grundy and Co Excavations has added two new Volvo FM 8x4 tippers to its mixed fleet of 20 vehicles.

Managing director Kevin Grundy explains that the deal follows his firm's investment in £1.6 million worth of sand washing plant. "Knowing that [this] would unearth unexplored markets, we began looking at purchasing two vehicles some time ago," he says.

He also reports that the choice of Volvo tippers was based on trials across Grundy's existing trucks. "Our Volvo fleet excelled in a number of areas, the most notable being fuel efficiency. Fuel performance figures were in excess of 50% greater on the Volvo's – averaging 9mpg – compared with the rest of our fleet attaining just over 6mpg."

The new tippers, from local Volvo Dealership Thomas Hardie Commercials, were specified with T-ride suspension, a nine-speed manual transmission and Euro-4 engine technology delivering 380bhp.

"Based on fuel savings alone it made sound commercial sense to purchase Volvo," comments Grundy.
