GullyWhale tankers proving popular in Scotland 24 June 2011

Inverclyde Council has taken delivery of a new GullyWhale tanker, from Whale Tankers, as a replacement vehicle.

Inverclyde Council's convener of safe and sustainable communities, Councillor Robert Moran, says that the organisation is benefitting from a range of improved operational, and health and safety related features.

Specified as part of the Scotland Excel procurement contract, Inverclyde's GullyWhale MVC is based on DAF's LF 55.220 18-tonne 4 x 2 day cab chassis.

It was specified with a twin compartment body – a 800 gallon tank dedicated to clean water for jetting, and a 1,000 gallon debris/sludge tank.

The Chapter 8 compliant tanker includes Whale's anti-vibration gully boom control unit, developed in-house as a means of reducing health and safety concerns surrounding HAV (hand-arm vibration).

It also features an Orca 240 high pressure jetting unit, with the main and secondary reels having their own pressure control switches that, with the addition of a heavy-duty unloader valve, allows for responsive jetting control.

Moran points to the jetting nozzle's 'safe start' mode, which ensures that the jetting pressure reverts to zero after each operation, and then increases as required. For hand-lance jetting, it also allows for the jetting pressure to start at 25 Bar, before automatically ramping up.

Vacuum performance comes from a Mistral 402 series exhauster-compressor, specified by many councils and commercial operators, due to its proven performance and reliability.

"We were particularly impressed by the latest improvements that Whale has introduced, as they are important to municipal operators," states Moran. "In addition to providing good quality vehicles, they also have the back-up infrastructure within Scotland."
