Harsh tractor kits standard spec for Walter Carefoot17 January 2018

Walter Carefoot & Sons (Transport) is specifying Harsh tractor kits as standard for all new trucks joining its bulk tipper fleet.

The decision is part of a fleet upgrade: the Lancashire-based operator has just taken delivery of a New Generation Scania R450, with six more due for delivery in the spring. The fleet will be 40-strong this year.

“Tractor kits are perhaps only a small part of a bigger whole, but they’re vital – without them the tipper simply doesn’t tip,” says Rob Dean, Carefoot’s operations director.

“We choose Harsh tractor kits because they are light, compact, easy to fit and above all reliable. As such, they complement trucks such as the latest New Generation Scanias perfectly.”

Designed for smooth and fast operation, the Harsh tractor kit features a high-pressure bent axis piston pump. Combining reduced size with bi-rotational direction, the pump is suitable for a wide variety of PTOs and gearboxes. Oil tanks, made from lightweight aluminium, can be fitted to either the chassis side rail or behind the truck cab.

The Scania tractors also feature a lighter mid-lift axle fitted with 17.5in wheels. This offers the dual benefit of not only a 300kg weight saving over a standard spec 6x2 tractor, but also a small but valuable increase in chassis space, thereby providing additional room for fitting Harsh’s lightweight, compact 200-litre side-mounted aluminium hydraulic oil tank.

Working in conjunction with SDC trailers and principally carrying aggregates or agricultural products, payload is a respectable 28.5 tonnes. Additionally, a 130 cubic yard Legras remote control walking floor trailer has also joined the Carefoot fleet with the Harsh tractor kit equally suited to powering this tractor-trailer combination.

As part of the fleet upgrade, Carefoot has moved from a five-year to three-year replacement strategy for its new vehicles.
