Haulier extends fleet with first-time Volvo order24 January 2014

Haulier David G Davies & Sons has taken delivery of its first Volvo trucks – an FH-460 and an FH16-750 – selecting both with a 6x2 configuration to secure maximum residual value.

The two tractor units are performing well on fuel, according to managing director Chris Davies.

"Although we run with a variety of trailers, including some 4.6m-high box vans, we're achieving 8.9mpg with the FH16-750," he says. "The FH-460 is returning between 9 and 9.3mpg."

The Glossop-based operator has already ordered two more Volvo trucks: a 26-tonne gvw FH420 rigid with Globetrotter cab, and another FH-460 tractor unit. All are being supplied by dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials.

The haulier's 15-strong fleet contains both 4x2 and 6x2 tractor units.

All four vehicles were specified with the three-axle configuration. Says Davies: "We can operate 4x2 tractor units at lower gross weights. However, we made the decision to go with the 6x2 configuration as the residual values are better. Resale value is an important consideration."

Each truck is expected to cover 110,000km per year and is equipped with Volvo I-See software and the I-Shift automated transmission.
