Hayton Coulthard lifts fleet capability with Volvo FH tractors UPDATED04 December 2018

Scottish haulier Hayton Coulthard Transport has taken delivery of three Volvo FH tractors, the first the operator has ordered with Volvo’s Tandem Axle Lift.

Supplied by dealer Stuarts Truck and Bus, the three Volvo FH 6x4 tractors are also specified with Extra High chassis for maximum ground clearance when working off road.

The Globetrotter-cabbed vehicles are powered by D13K engines producing 454bhp and driving through I-Shift automated gearboxes.

The new 3,200mm wheelbase Volvo tractor units will haul bulk trailers on a local contract in Dumfries and Galloway.

“The FHs will spend around 50% of their running time empty, so Tandem Axle Lift is the ideal choice for this job,” says Duncan Coulthard, managing director at Hayton Coulthard Transport.

Tandem Axle Lift can cut fuel use by up to 4%, says Volvo. When the truck is unloaded, a button on the dashboard is pushed to disengage and raise the drive axle, but as soon as the truck is loaded again, the drive axle automatically lowers and engages.

Coulthard adds: “The overall ride height and chassis clearance is exceptional and will be ideal when the trucks visit landfill sites.”

UPDATED 23 May 2019. Removed the trailer descriptor 'walking floor', a term which is trademarked by Keith Manufacturing Co.
