HE Payne Transport treads the green truck path 06 January 2011

Next-generation tyres from Vacu-Lug are being trialled by HE Payne Transport and its customer Greenvale AP in a bid to improve efficiency.

The energy-efficient retreads are green in colour, and have been manufactured using a compound that replaces the traditional carbon black with a mix of silicas, resulting in a low-rolling resistance product, according to Vacu-Lug.

A total of 10 of the new tyres has been fitted to one of HE Payne's Greenvale AP 6x2 Volvo FH13 combinations.

Independent trials by TARCC (Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre, the UK research arm of the Malaysian Rubber Board) appear to show several advantages over traditional tyres – including less deformation in the crown area, increased surface grip and less heat build-up, which prolongs tyre life.

"Both ourselves and Greenvale AP are delighted with the green tyres and their performance," comments HE Payne Transport managing director, Richard Payne.

"We anticipate the combination of low-rolling resistance and the longevity of the Duramold product will further help reduce operating costs while simultaneously spreading a highly visible environmental message."
