Heavy haulage firm raises the bar with Volvo FH16 at 120 tonnes02 June 2015

Haulier and steel specialist Intake Transport has marked 20 years in business with the acquisition of a Volvo FH16-650 6x4 tractor unit, plated for STGO CAT 3 operation at up to 120 tonnes gcw.

Supplied by dealer Crossroads Truck & Bus, of Scunthorpe, the vehicle has a D16K650 engine rated at 650bhp, which delivers maximum power between 1450 and 1900 rpm. Maximum torque output is 3150 Nm, produced between 950 and 1450 rpm.

Specification of the FH16-650 includes a Globetrotter XL cab, Volvo Dynamic Steering, I-Shift automated transmission with gearbox retarder and RTH2610F hub reduction tandem drive-axles.

Cab specification includes the Visibility Pack+, with rain-sensor, Bi-Xenon dynamic headlamps, static cornering lights and head lamp cleaning.

"We wanted to push our heavy haulage capabilities up another cog from 80 tonnes," says Richard Burgin, Intake's owner and director.

"We decided to go for the FH16 as it's a great looking truck and the spec really hits the nail on the head. This is the fifth Volvo we have operated and we have always had good back-up from Crossroads."

The vehicle also features custom-built lockers on the chassis at the back of the cab, built by SB Components of Wisbech. These are heated via vents in the rear panel, so that equipment and PPE gear can be dried by the throughput of warm air from the engine bay.
