Hermes delivers win-win with Ryder deal and Michelin tyre service05 February 2015

Home delivery courier business Hermes has awarded two major contracts for vehicle additions to its fleet and to extend its tyre service agreement.

For the former, the business has taken delivery of 54 Euro 6 DAF tractors and rigids, on contract hire from Ryder.

The deal, for 30 DAF CF85.400 4x2 tractors and 24 DAF LF 45.180 12-tonne rigids, sees the number of Ryder-supplied trucks in its fleet grow to 450.

Hermes fleet services manager Rob Elmore says Ryder's recent expansion to heavier vehicles has "definitely worked to our advantage", adding: "We anticipate that Ryder will continue to be our preferred transportation partner."

The company has also renewed a three-year tyre contract with Michelin, after the tyre management deal delivered a 12% reduction in fuel costs.

Called Effitires, Michelin's outsourced tyre management service covers the entire Hermes fleet of 190 tractors, 368 rigids and 760 trailers.

Michelin X Line Energy tyres have been fitted to most vehicles, with the agreement covering tyre regrooving, retreading and replacement by ATS Euromaster and Michelin Certified Centres.

"The Effitires contract is ideal for our business as it gives us absolute confidence that our tyres are being looked after by the experts," states Claire Phelan, Hermes UK's head of procurement.

"With invoicing based on a price per mile, the contract enables us to accurately predict our tyre costs across the prime mover fleet, making budgeting much simpler," she adds.
