HGV type approvalt risk – SMMT warning11 April 2014

Up to 20,000 commercial vehicle registrations per year could be delayed by failing to meet new Type Approval legislation.

That's the warning from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which is urging bodybuilders to take urgent action before the legislation comes into effect later this year.

From 29 October, the new rules will apply to around two thirds of heavy commercial vehicles – those built in stages weighing more than 3.5 tonnes.

These vehicles are in the last category to come under a raft of new Type Approval legislation that will see all commercial vehicles in Europe conform to a common set of rules.

Without the correct approval from the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), as many as half of annual heavy CV registrations could be considerably delayed.

With no official stamp of approval, the only alternative route to registering a vehicle in any EU country would be the DVSA-administered Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) scheme.

However, says SMMT, this is time consuming and the system is expected to be overloaded with applications.

SMMT says its technical advisors have been "inundated" with calls, asking for advice on Type Approval issues.

The association had held workshops in conjunction with the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and three more dates have been added: 13 May, Haydock racecourse, Warrington; 14 May, Sedgefield racecourse, Durham; and 15 May, Falkirk Football Club, Scotland.
