Higher levels of compliance with FTA’s inspection service24 February 2014

Figures released by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) show that members using its Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) are 86% less likely to have serious brake defects, compared to average VOSA findings.

The FTA took data compiled by its Gateway management information system and compared it with VOSA's Effectiveness Report 2012 to 2013. The results point to a higher standard of compliance by freight operators using the FTA's VIS.

"FTA members who use our VIS are significantly more compliant in a number of key safety critical areas, compared to those stopped by VOSA and issued with a prohibition," says David Wylie, FTA's head of VIS.

Some of the notable differences include: brake systems and components (8.9% defects found by VOSA, 3.5% by FTA engineers); service brake operations (4.7% VOSA, 0.7% FTA); indicators and hazard warning lamps (2.6% VOSA, 0.6% FTA); and trailer road wheels and hubs (4% VOSA, 0.28% FTA).

For operators who don't currently use VIS, FTA is offering an introductory VIS maintenance systems audit. The cost for the audit, with a roadworthiness inspection of one vehicle, is £350 plus VAT.
