Highfield takes Fuso Canter Euro 5 recovery conversion 19 October 2010

Devon-based Highfield Garage has added a clean green Euro 5 and EEV (enhanced environmentally-friendly vehicle) recovery truck to its six-strong fleet of Fuso Canter-based units.

This 7.5-tonner is powered by a 175hp version of the 3.0-litre engine, matched to a new six-speed transmission. It retains the space-saving, dashboard-mounted gearstick, but the previous 'dog-leg' first gear has been replaced with a standard layout.

Highfield proprietor Jon Cox explains that the Canter is a 7C18D, with a factory-built Double cab, capable of carrying the driver and five passengers. Roger Dyson Group did the conversion, fitting the chassis with its Enforcer 2 roadside rescue lifting equipment. The hydraulic tilting spectacle system specified has a lifting capacity of 2,500kg and is radio controlled.

"The Canter is ideal for this job. Its relatively compact dimensions are a key attribute, because they allow the vehicle to get into and out of areas that others in the same weight category might struggle to access," says Cox.

"Payload and towing ability are also very good, while we've also found our Canters to be superbly reliable," he adds. "The new engine is particularly impressive too – the power rating is unchanged but our new Canter seems to have a lot more get up and go."

The vehicle was supplied by Tewkesbury-based Mercedes-Benz dealer Mudie-Bond.
