Highways England around the corner as Infrastructure Act becomes law13 February 2015

Improvements to the UK’s major road network will be streamlined and more efficient, says the government, after the Infrastructure Act completed its passage through parliament and became law yesterday (12 February).

A key result of the Act will be the formation of Highways England, a government-owned company to manage road improvements through access to long-term funding.

The new company will deliver the government's roads investment strategy, with more than 100 projects planned, worth £15 billion.

"Good transport is fundamental in helping our economy grow, which is why the government is making record levels of investment," says Patrick McLoughlin, transport secretary.

"Through the creation of Highways England, we expect to see savings to the taxpayer of at least £2.6 billion over the next 10 years."
