Home improvement retailer builds fuel-efficient fleet with 26 Sprinters11 December 2014

Independent home improvement retailer Leekes has taken delivery of 26 Mercedes-Benz 313 CDI Sprinters for its delivery operations across South Wales, Wiltshire and the Midlands.

Supplied by dealer Euro Commercials, all the Sprinters feature 129bhp common rail turbodiesel engines. The Pontyclun-based retailer has also specified BlueEfficiency packages for the vehicles, which incorporate a range of features to boost fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

The features include Eco-Start, which cuts the engine when the vehicle is stationary, restarting it when the driver depresses the clutch pedal. Other features include low rolling resistance tyres and improved power steering, fuel pump and battery management.

Most of the new vehicles are long-bodied panel vans with external glass-carrying frails and internal racking, which are being used by Leekes' double-glazing fitters.

The new additions also include one extra-long van for furniture deliveries and six long chassis cabs with dropside bodies for the firm's conservatory base installation teams.

"We bought our first Sprinters in 1998, since when they have always proved outstandingly reliable, cost-effective to operate and popular with our drivers," says Stuart Leeke, director.

Most of the latest Sprinters are replacements for older vehicles.
