Industrial Chemicals chooses Actros for safety and efficiency 25 January 2017

Grays, Essex-based Industrial Chemicals Group is taking delivery of a fleet of 38 new Actros tractor units, all selected in large part for their safety attributes.

ICG managing director Edwin Strang specified the vehicles with Mercedes-Benz’s optional Safety Packs, including Active Brake Assist 3 autonomous braking and Proximity Control Assist systems.

“Working in the chemicals industry, often with hazardous products, risk management is integral to everything we do,” explains Strang.

“These vehicles lead the field in terms of safety technology and their introduction underlines our commitment to the protection of our own employees and other road users,” he adds.

All the new trucks are Actros 2548 BigSpace models specified with the second-generation 12.8-litre, OM471 476bhp straight-six engine, claimed to deliver 3% fuel savings compared to their predecessors.

ICG also went for the Powershift 3 AMT (automated manual transmission) with the optional Predictive Powertrain Control system – which uses digital 3D mapping and GPS data to scan the road ahead – to further improve fuel savings.

“Prior to ordering our new tractor units we took soundings from other industry contacts and conducted extensive research, which validated the manufacturer’s claims regarding fuel-efficiency and environmental compatibility,” states Strang.

“Two of our driver-trainers also attended a Road Efficiency Live event, staged recently by Mercedes-Benz and were hugely impressed by all they saw and heard, which is very encouraging.”

In addition to its Actros tractors, all of which are being equipped with wet kits, ICG has ordered five 26-tonne Actros 2535 rigids and a single 12-tonne Atego, all with curtainside bodies.

Supplied by dealer S&B Commercials, all of these vehicles are being acquired through CharterWay contract hire agreements with Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.

“S & B Commercials have worked hard to win our business, and have been well supported by the manufacturer,” comments Strang.

“This order represents a major investment so we went to great lengths to get it right – I’ve every confidence that’s exactly what we’ve done.”
