Internet bid reveals 42-year-old Volvo classic19 April 2016

Jon Burgess, supplier of new and used livestock transporters, recently placed the winning bid at an internet auction for a 1974 Volvo F86 three-axle rigid – and, when he took it for an MOT, the only fault was a valve in the brake pedal assembly.

The Newton-on-Derwent operator drove the former JO Adams & Son vehicle from Yorkshire to Daventry: “Fortunately, I managed to find a replacement part and, once fitted, I drove home with a valid certificate,” says Burgess.

The overall condition of the truck was almost original quality, he says: “The flatbed body was built by Barham Truck Bodies of Northamptonshire and on this sits a potato bulker manufactured by Cranford Engineering of Knutsford, Cheshire. If you look under the conveyor you can even see soil that’s been there for 25 years.

“My plans are to take this wonderful truck on commercial rallies, as you cannot have something as magnificent as this truck without sharing your good fortune with other enthusiasts,” he adds.

Burgess is a regular customer of Volvo Used Trucks, of Stockton, where he buys four or five trucks a year.
