Ipswich Buses gives green light to MiX Telematics renewal05 December 2014

Ipswich Buses has renewed its fleet management contract with MiX Telematics, citing fuel savings and improved passenger experience as the key factors.

The council-owned operator has been using the Fleet Manager solution since 2011 for its 85-strong fleet. Since then, it says, it has achieved "sustained" fuel savings and has scored highly in passenger surveys.

"We began saving fuel as soon as the system was installed," says Dean Robbie, operations manager for Ipswich Buses.

"While it is obviously important that we should minimise our fuel consumption, the fact that the passenger experience has been so enhanced by Fleet Manager is a critical factor for us... This was a key reason for renewing our contract with MiX Telematics."

Each vehicle has MiX's in-cab RIBAS system, alerting the driver if parameters for revving, idling, harsh braking or acceleration, or speeding are likely to be exceeded.

The system uses a traffic light method to notify drivers: amber prompts the driver to correct his or her style, while a red light results in the system recording an infringement.

All data captured by Fleet Manager, including the RIBAS infringement data, is relayed to MiX Telematics' secure server, which generates reports for the operator.

"Our drivers have responded extremely well to Fleet Manager, as demonstrated by our improved fuel performance and passenger experience results," reports Robbie.

"We see few red reports and are overall extremely satisfied with the long-term benefits delivered by our investment in MiX Telematics' service."
