Irish transport sector on road to low carbon20 December 2013

The Irish government has launched a public consultation this week on carbon reduction in the transport sector, with a view to developing a low-carbon roadmap to 2050.

Neil McDonnell, FTA's general manager for Ireland, says the organisation is "delighted" with the announcement.

"FTA Ireland has been actively assisting its members to reduce their carbon footprint since 2010, when we introduced our LCRS [Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme]," he adds.

FTA is also pledging to intensify efforts to help the sector reduce carbon emissions in 2014, assisting members to use the five key levers for reduction of greenhouse gases.

These are, says McDonnell: better fuel efficiency; maximising payload; minimising empty running; monitoring fuel carbon intensity; and optimising modal split, such as using rail and water, when appropriate.
