IRTE invites members to debate the general election 2010 18 March 2010

With general election fervour heating-up across the country, IRTE wants to open a debate with its members about what engineering professionals want from their political leaders.

Nick Jones, chief executive of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers – the umbrella organisation for IRTE), points out that a recent 'call to action' by the Royal Academy of Engineering, on behalf of engineering institutions, focuses on three particular areas:

First, the delivery of robust and renewed national infrastructure, meeting low carbon targets.

Second, an economy in which high technology innovation can flourish, building upon success in, for example, aviation, defence and engineering design and consultancy.

Third, the skills and talents to deliver these challenges – whichh means increasing the supply of young people equipped to meet the needs of the industry.

"Environmental consideration, supporting the engineering industry and meeting the challenges of skills shortages are core values of the society," says Jones.

"As such, SOE is creating a web page, due to go live on 1 April, containing the SOE's views on key issues, and a supporting Discussion Forum for members to add their opinions."

Ian Chisholm, IRTE's head of membership and technical services, says: "Members' real world experiences contribute to SOE policy and provide invaluable suggestions on how government can support our industry. The society hopes that, from this open discussion, members who feel strongly about certain issues will raise them with campaigning candidates in their local constituencies."
