Iveco goes the distance with the New Stralis range16 June 2016

Iveco has unveiled the New Stralis, with the three-vehicle range boasting a new driveline and promising outstanding reliability and efficiency for all types of operation – regional, urban and long haul.

Heralded as the TCO2 champion – for its total cost of ownership and CO2 reduction – the range includes the New Stralis XP, for long-distance operations, and the gas-powered NP, which runs on CNG and LNG.

The XP, claims Iveco, is packed with fuel-saving features and new services to maximise uptime and fuel efficiency.

The New Stralis NP, meanwhile, is billed as the most sustainable international transport truck ever and, says the manufacturer, delivers “a real breakthrough in the gas truck industry”, with its ability to offer the power rating, comfort, transmission technology and fuel autonomy to suit long-distance haulage missions.

Pierre Lahutte, Iveco brand president, says: “The New Stralis has been designed to lower the TCO and CO 2 of transporters, as well providing the very best reliability to its owners.”

He describes the New Stralis NP as “a game changer”, and adds: “[It is] the first and only gas truck that has demonstrated it can be used in long-haul missions. We are about to open new frontiers in sustainable transport.”

The New Stralis features a completely redesigned driveline, a new electrical and electronic architecture, the new best-in- class transmission, rear axle and a rear suspension, and introduces the latest-generation GPS predictive functions and features to enhance fuel economy and sustainability.

New engines have been designed to reduce friction and a new anti-idling function automatically turns off the engine after a pre-set period of time when the vehicle is parked.

So-called ‘smart auxiliaries’ on the New Stralis 480XP and 570XP prevent energy loss when not in use: they include the clutch compressor and air processing unit, energy-recovery alternator with intelligent battery monitoring and a variable-flow steering pump.

The new range is said to cut maintenance and repair costs by 5% compared with a current model on a standard three-year contract, and by 8% over four years.

A full report on the New Stralis range – and the accompanying range of services – will appear in the next issue of Transport Engineer magazine.
