Joined up thinking key to transport planning, says CILT 25 March 2014
CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) president Jim Steer is expected to call for more joined up thinking in transport planning today (25 March 2014) in his nnual president's lecture.
The talk, titled 'Transport Planning: Back to the Future?' will trace the evolution of transport planning from its origins in the 1960s and make the point that efficient project planning has to be holistic.
Steer believes that unprecedented growth, shifts in the balance of transport modes and "agglomeration economics" in London mean that transport networks are being challenged as never before.
Today's call, he says, will be for a "national spatial plan" to provide a framework within which transport plans can be developed, tested and updated.
"No longer should good planning be seen as inimical to the strong role that the private sector plays in urban renewal and a growing economy," argues Steer.
"Businesses need certainty, and clear and accessible plans that the private sector has had a role in formulating come from plans at national, regional and city level," he says.
