JW Crowther choose Stralis X-Way tipper with ‘game-changing’ Hi-SCR07 November 2019

Plant hire and bulk excavation business JW Crowther has added the first IVECO Stralis X-Way to its tipper fleet, after positive performance from a demonstrator vehicle.

Supplied by dealer Northern Commercials, the Leeds-based operator’s new addition is a 32-tonne 8x4 rigid with a Townend tipper body, and it replaces an older competitor model in the 35-strong mixed fleet.

The truck maker’s Hi-SCR engine technology with passive regeneration of the DPF put the vehicle “at the top of the shopping list”, according to Nigel Crowther, director at JW Crowther.

“Our first experience of Hi-SCR was in 2016 when we bought an IVECO Eurocargo roadsweeper, and it was a real game-changer.

“Compared with other Euro VI vehicles we had at the time, the IVECO system eliminated the 40-minute delays we’d been suffering during forced regeneration cycles. These can add up to significant downtime over the weeks and months, but with IVECO, our productivity is increased and we aren’t wasting drivers’ hours.”

The truck’s main duties are shifting muck from construction sites, so the operator chose IVECO’s ‘OFF’ chassis specification, which gives high ground clearance and an approach angle of more than 25 degrees.

The vehicle is powered by an 11.1-litre Cursor 11 engine delivering up to 414bhp and 2,000Nm of torque, driving through a 12-speed Hi-Tronix transmission. Interior features include air conditioning, Bluetooth, reversing cameras and factory-fitted satellite navigation.
