Kelly floored by Schmitz Cargobull Mega trailers 30 October 2012

Kelly International Transport is adding four Schmitz Cargobull Mega Varios trailers to its fleet, because of the payload advantage, despite a requirement for Joloda floors.

The Kent-based haulier – which predominantly exports paper reels from three UK paper mills to newsprint and packaging customers throughout Europe – is scaling-up its fleet of 16 trailers in-line with business expansion.

"We need our equipment to be [more] flexible," explains Martin Kelly, director of Kelly International Transport. "And the Mega trailer with a height adjustable Varios body gives us everything we need in one trailer."

Kelly explains that, because of the key requirement to transport paper reels, Joloda floors are essential, but adds that other trailer manufacturers have told him that has to compromise internal load space.

"Schmitz Cargobull is able to prevent this, with a slimmer chassis depth and a Joloda floor integrated into the trailer structure," he reports.

The new bespoke semi-trailers allow Kelly to take advantage of a three-metre interior height, as the height can be adjusted at the rear and bulkhead in 50 mm steps. This allows for a fifth wheel coupling of between 965 and 1,150 mm.

The versatility of the Mega Varios – which still meets the four-metre overall running height regulations of trailers in Europe – eliminates the need for vehicle swaps, as the trailer can accommodate a capacity of up to 100m³, catering for a broad range of cargo, advises Kelly.

The four new trailers are expected to remain on the fleet for the next five years.
