Kinlochbervie’s Volvo FH stay cool with I-Park Cool 17 September 2013

The Kinlochbervie Fish Selling Company has renewed its two-vehicle fleet with a pair of new Volvo FH-540 tractor units, fitted with the Globetrotter XL cab and Volvo's I-Park Cool cab air conditioning system.

The Euro-5 tractors, each with the 540bhp engine mated to Volvo's I-Shift automated transmission, have also been equipped with extensive additional driving lights.

"These extra lenses are not just for show," comments Kinlochbervie's operations manager and fish salesman Ian Munro, who says they are now hauling recently purchased Gray & Adams refrigerated trailers.

"To cross from the west to east coast in the Highlands, we use 45 miles of single track down to Lairg and then climb over Struie hill to join the A9 at Skiach services," he explains.

"This high level route is notorious for deer crossing at night and our drivers must be able to see them early to avoid any potential collisions."

Munro also states that the Alcoa Dura Bright alloy wheels specified, because they have proven more resistant to the fish market's corrosive sea air, than steel rims.

"We chose the new Volvo FH after our two experienced drivers were impressed with a demonstrator," states Munro.

"We specified Volvo's I-Park Cool system, which allows our drivers to sleep with a controlled cab climate during the day, without needing to run the engine," he adds.

But for Munro, the deal wasn't just about Volvo technology. Complete mechanical reliability, he says, is crucial, since Kinlochbervie trucks deliver fish to markets in Scotland, England and northern France.

"Our vehicles work continual nightshift," he says, "and usually leave the fish market in Kinlochbervie after 8pm, so the 24-hour operation of Volvo's dealership at Inverness was also a big attraction."
