LCV operators urged to educate drivers on fleet costs ahead of Euro 610 August 2015

Supermarket fuel card provider FuelGenie is urging operators to keep a tight rein on fleet costs to help them maximise the benefits of Euro 6 emissions standards, coming into force for light commercial vehicles next month.

New diesel vehicles are due to see the most significant impact, with the permitted level of NOx emissions dropping to 80mg/km compared to the 180mg/km for Euro 5.

However, says FuelGenie, maintenance costs can take a hit if the AdBlue tank is not regularly topped up.

Tanks are typically refilled during regular servicing but, as the company points out, fluid consumption can vary significantly by vehicle model and driving style, so it is recommending that regular checks are implemented.

Also, says FuelGenie, its card enables drivers to fill up at more than 1,250 supermarket forecourts – a cheaper option than motorway service stations.

Operators also have access to FuelGenie's 24/7 service to set card use limits and receive regular reports to monitor fuel spend.

Claire Alderson, sales and marketing manager at FuelGenie, says that, for LCV fleet operators, "educating drivers of the vehicle changes and regular maintenance will be a new consideration facing fleet managers".

She adds: "By taking simple measures such as switching to a centralised fuel card service and regular vehicle maintenance, fleet operators can gain greater control over spending and keep overheads low."
