Les Smith Haulage saves £3,000 per month on fuel 11 March 2015

Les Smith Haulage says it has cut its fuel bill by more than £3,000 per month since working with vehicle telematics specialist CMS SupaTrak.

The Swindon-based, family run business began investigating telematics systems last year and, after exploring the options from several suppliers, went for a fully-managed trial with CMS SupaTrak involving three vehicles and drivers from its 30-strong fleet.

Les Smith Haulage greed that, if the trial could show a 4% improvement in fuel efficiency, the company would sign up and go fleet-wide.

The initial audit phase of the trial showed drivers were over revving, using excessive throttle use allowing too much idling, so CMS SupaTrak put in place 'driver eco-coaching', with in-cab driver behaviour alerts devices (SDA) installed in the trial vehicles.

That resulted in an immediate improvement in driver style, according to transport manager Nick Smith.

"Having an integrated system allowed us to have complete fleet visibility for the first time, coupled with driver information, traffic data and remaining driver's hours," comments Smith.

"It put us in a better position to make informed decisions and increase productivity."

Then with fuel reduction of more than 6% at the end of the trail period – equating to £100 saved per vehicle per month – as well as reduced vehicle wear and tear and improved road safety, Les Smith Haulage proceeded to roll out the technology across the entire fleet.

"The process we went through with CMS SupaTrak was stringent and well managed," comments Smith.

"They worked closely with us and supported the business and the drivers with the introduction of the new technology."
