LEZ compliance ramps up with Eminox 15 April 2011

As Transport for London (TfL) tightens the emission standards and widens the scope of the Low Emission Zone in early 2012, it estimates that 145,000 vehicles will not comply.

With more than 20,000 of these expected to take the retrofit compliance option, retrofit emissions technology manufacturer Eminox is urging operators to act now.

With the new LEZ requirements less than nine months away, the company fears many operators will leave it too late, and then struggle with a last-minute rush – potentially leading to vehicle downtime or fines.

TfL estimates that 75,000 HGVs, buses and coaches are currently non compliant with the tighter LEZ requirements that come into force from 3 January 2012, with 15,000—20,000 choosing the retrofit option.

In addition, some 70,000 larger vans and minibuses do not currently meet the new LEZ requirements. Of these, some 6,000—10,000 are expected to go for retrofit emissions reduction.

Mike Galey, director of marketing at Eminox says: "With expected demand for retrofit technology being exceptionally high, operators should not risk leaving it to the last minute to comply with the new legislation. The lack of general awareness is concerning."

Tough new standards for retrofit technologies mean that only full filtration diesel particulate filters are approved, he advises – unlike in previous phases that allowed partial filters.

Vehicle operators need to ensure that they choose an approved retrofit solution to be able to travel into the LEZ without charges.
