London council upgrades cameras on waste and recycling fleet29 July 2019

The London Borough of Harrow has upgraded the cameras on its 100-strong fleet of waste, recycling and cleansing vehicles, switching to the RX3 360˚ camera system from Innovative Safety Systems (ISS).

The council has used hard disk recording systems from ISS since 2009, but decided to upgrade the technology to improve safety and reduce the number of fraudulent insurance claims.

“With this system we don’t have to manually collect the data; it is automatically downloaded via WiFi as each vehicle returns to the depot,” says Varsha Parmar, Harrow’s cabinet member for environment.

The council is insured via its own in-house insurance department, which can now remotely access and interrogate the recorded footage.

“In the short time that we have been using the new systems, we have already successfully disputed a number of claims,” adds Parmar.
