MAN Lion’s City Hybrid bus honoured in OekoGlobe awards13 September 2011

MAN Lion's City Hybrid has been named best bus in the international OekoGlobe 2011 environmental awards, Vehicle Innovations in Public Transport category.

The panel of judges cited the vehicle's serial hybrid drive, which saves up to 30% on fuel and hence also CO2 emissions.

MAN Lion's City Hybrid (up to 18 tonnes) is already operating with several German and European transport authorities, where its technology – optimised for low average speeds and multiple stop starts – is claimed to be ideal.

Apart from the serial hybrid drive, MAN Lion's City Hybrid recuperates braking energy and is also fitted with automatic start-stop equipment.

MAN points out that city buses spend 25—40% of their operating time stationary at bus stops or red lights.

Spokesman for the judges Prof Dr Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, director of the CAR Centre Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, announced the winners in Karlsruhe on last week (6 September 2011).
