MAN receives eCarTec Award 2012 for low-emission truck 29 October 2012

MAN's research vehicle MAN Metropolis – which starts a two-year trial as a refuse collection vehicle at end of this year – has received the eCarTec Award 2012 – the Bavarian State Award for Electric Mobility.

The electric hybrid vehicle is aimed at heavy-duty transport tasks in cities, and is both quiet and emission-free.

Energy storage is via a modular lithium-ion battery, which MAN explains is located beneath the cab to optimise space, weight distribution and safety.

A diesel engine from Volkswagen generates on-board power for onboard auxiliaries and also acts as a range extender for the heavy-duty truck.
