Manchester takes first of a fleet of Optare hybrids 04 November 2010

Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) took delivery of the first of a fleet of 66 Optare hybrid buses in a handover ceremony in the city centre earlier this week.

It is the biggest order for hybrid buses taken so far for Optare, and CEO Jim Sumner handed over the first to Councillor David Sandiford, chair of the GMITA Bus Network and GMPTE services committee.

"Our strategic alliance with Ashok Leyland is expected to provide further impetus to our progress in delivering affordable products that meet the increasing demand for low emission buses," commented Sumner.

"As well as diesel electric hybrids we can offer full-electric, a range of alternative low carbon fuel systems, and during 2011 an exciting new mechanical hybrid model," he added, referring to the Flybus work with Allison and Ricardo.

GMPTE's order is likely to be made up of Solo, Solo SR, Versa and Tempo models, all featuring a diesel-electric hybrid system using ultra-capacitors. Their modular design allows the same hybrid platform and architecture to be used, enabling cost savings in production and operation.

All the buses will feature Optare's Eco Drive dashboard, aimed at encouraging optimal driver behaviour. They will also be equipped with Telematics, combining passenger counting, onboard information, CCTV and vehicle diagnostics.
