McCulla chose the CameraMatics solution after trialling three systems, and says the savings have come from fraud prevention and lower insurance costs, improved driver behaviour and a 3% drop in fuel consumption, with the system paying for itself within the first eight months.
The cloud-based solution enables the operator to view footage in the event of an incident, enabling claims to be defended more rigorously. McCulla’s insurers agreed to part-fund the technology after seeing how it could be used as a full fleet and risk management solution.
Brian Beattie, operations director at McCulla, said: “Insurance is a major cost to a haulier of our size. Insurers now realise that they need to better profile the fleet on its own merits rather than the traditional pooled risk. They need to facilitate fleets to act, which ultimately reduces the risk they have to underwrite.”
Since implementing the system two years ago, and integrating it with its existing telematics solution, the operator has also improved driver safety and performance, using clips of footage for training purposes.
This, in turn, has improved mpg across the 100-vehicle fleet by 3%, or £80,000 a year, says McCulla.
“What has really revolutionised how we make use of the footage is how the CameraMatics system allows us to quickly and easily locate footage for incidents reported by it and our telematics system, and access that footage remotely, no matter where the vehicle is across Europe,” says Beattie.
“Being able to have the information at your fingertips and download footage immediately has made our compliance manager’s life so much easier and allows us to provide visual feedback to our drivers.”
