MCL goes low with new Volvo FH trucks04 January 2016

MCL Logistics has extended its 110-strong fleet with two new Volvo FH-500 X-Low Height 4x2 tractors.

Supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West on contract hire via Volvo Financial Services, the Newport-based operator’s latest additions are 3.8m wheelbase tractors with Globetrotter XL cabs.

The 40 tonne gcw vehicles both have 13-litre, 500bhp engines and I-Shift automated transmissions. They also feature air-suspended drive axles fitted with 295/55R 22.5 tyres that contribute to an X-Low fifth wheel height of 950mm.

James Howells, MCL Logistics’ managing director, says the Volvo FH is “a luxury truck” and has “the most driver appeal”.

He adds: “We collect and deliver automotive parts throughout Europe and our drivers can be away for up to three weeks at a time. As a company, we are working to encourage young people into the industry and we compete very hard to attract the best quality drivers... Drivers know it is a better truck and they want to drive the FH.”

The trucks also perform well on fuel economy, he says, and regularly average 10 mpg.
