Looking at the driveline, the new black cab uses Mercedes’ low-emission 114CDI 136bhp Euro 6 engine driving through a 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic gearbox.
Controlled via a column-mounted lever, this transmission is claimed to reduce driver stress through easy gear selection and smooth gear changes.
And the Vito Taxi also comes with fuel-saving BlueEfficiency measures, such as engine Start/Stop, as well as air conditioning and a full range of electrically powered accessories.
Turning to novelties, manoeuvrability has been enhanced via a rear steer axle, which allows the new taxi to meet the 25ft turning circle prescribed by the Public Carriage Office to enable U-turns in congested streets.
Tested by cabbies at the manufacturer’s VanExperience Live event, in June last year, and more recently as part of the city marketing campaign, the London edition takes the Compact body and is also wheelchair accessible.
