Michelin launches X Multi T trailer tyres22 July 2014

This month sees the European launch of Michelin's 385/65 R 22.5 X Multi T trailer tyre across Europe, and Michelin says it "sets the benchmark" for regional trailer tyres.

Michelin is also unveiling performance data which, says the company, reveals a 0.7 litre saving in fuel per 100km and a 10% increase in mileage when using the new tyre, compared to its predecessor, the XTE3.

New tread design improves longitudinal and lateral grip on dry and wet surfaces, giving better water dispersal and even wear. The groove design and longer ridges mean the tyre is marked M+S for winter conditions.

"We've taken a tyre popular with both trailer manufacturers and fleet operators alike, and built in new technology to deliver significant improvements on an already winning formula," says Guy Heywood, commercial director of Michelin's truck division in the UK and Ireland.

The tyre features a new rubber compound, created by Michelin's research and development teams, called Carbion.

New components and a new compounding process have lowered the tyre's operating temperature by 6°C, so reducing rolling resistance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, compared with the XTE3, explains Heywood.

In another new development, Michelin will progressively introduce RFID chips into its X Multi T tyres, so that transport managers will be able to track the use and condition of fleet tyres.
