Microlise proves its worth for Roberts Bakery25 January 2017

Cheshire-based Roberts Bakery has deployed a transport management solution from Microlise across its 90-strong fleet, and is anticipating cutting its distribution costs by more than 10%.

Roberts Bakery delivers 3.5 million loaves of baked goods every week across the UK and, following a competitive tender, it selected Microlise Fleet Performance and Journey Management. The cost reduction target will be met, it hopes, through improved driver performance and more efficiency journey planning.

The Fleet Performance solution will enable bakery managers to monitor driver performance, rating them from A to G. This can be assessed and compared via league tables on criteria such as idling, acceleration, braking, cornering, cruise control usage and speed – with driver training targeted more effectively at those who need it.

Journey Management is also being installed: it allows the bakery’s transport office and customer service users to monitor the status of trips against schedule, in real-time, as the route unfolds. It also improves planning through ‘planned vs actual’ route comparison.

Roberts Bakery is also implementing the Remote Digital Tachograph Download module for better management of drivers’ hours compliance.

Mark Owen, logistics director at Roberts Bakery, says it’s about getting product from the oven to the shelf in the quickest, most efficient manner: “Microlise is helping us to achieve this by reducing our fuel consumption and decreasing our environmental footprint – both of which are hugely important to us as a business.”
