Millbrook launches UK’s first commercial ISO 10844:2011 noise surface03 January 2013

Millbrook Proving Ground has become the first site in the UK to offer a commercial facility for surface noise testing that conforms with the recently introduced ISO specification.

The new surface is available far in advance of the ISO standards' mandatory introduction into legislative type approval requirements for ECE Regulation 51 – which is not due to be published until 2014.

Darren Carter, business development manager for Millbrook's vehicle measurement group, explains that legislation on pass-by noise levels means that future testing will be driven by having to understand both tyre and powertrain contributions.

He states that the new noise surface will enable Millbrook's engineers to help OEMs and others to check legislative compliance and to isolate areas of noise concern on vehicles.

Importantly, he says, the track will help manufacturers to conduct newly introduced 'off-cycle', higher speed testing, which will soon be mandated in future versions of ECE Regulation 51.

"The construction of this new ISO specification surface is a huge boost to Millbrook's noise testing portfolio," comments Carter.

"The composition and quality of the test track surface will mean that manufacturers will benefit from the most consistent and repeatable test surface commercially available in the UK," he continues.

"Using Millbrook's new ISO noise site is the noise testing equivalent of using reference fuels for emissions testing."
