Morris Lubricants promises “huge” fleet fuel savings 12 September 2014

Oil blender Morris Lubricants says it is currently testing a new "total lubricant solution" that could provide as much as 8% fuel savings in heavy commercial vehicles.

Simon Matthews, technical services manager at Morris Lubricants, states that the firm has tested its oils in 15 vehicles with an average payload of 14 tonnes.

Though still under trials, results to date, based on fuel additives alone, have delivered a 4% reduction, he says.

Next up, the trials will incorporate Morris Lubricants' fuel-efficient engine and transmission oils on a further 12 vehicles in a bid to further improve operating efficiency – leading to the looked for 8% fuel saving figure.

Matthews says the additional vehicles will ply varying delivery routes, including inner city and long distance with higher payloads on tractor units.

"The programme was initiated to provide a total lubricant solution to [redcue] ever-increasing fleet costs with proven performance," he explains.

"The target is to allow operators of large fleets to make substantial reductions to their fuel expenditure with subsequent reductions in operating temperatures of transmissions and differentials, thus reducing power losses," he adds.

Matthews points to the issue of sophisticated treatment devices under Euro 6, stating that it is now more important than ever to ensure that correct lubricants are used to avoid premature failures and costly replacements.

"With lower viscosity fluids being used and stringent controls on crankcase losses, achieving real mpg improvements requires a combined approached of fuel additives, and energy conserving engine oils, transmission and differential oils."
